Peer Review of Our Opening
The reviews we had back form our class were mostly complimenting our editing techniques and how professional our camera angles were, they also mentioned our production logo; saying how professional and well made it was. the non diagetic audio was criticized for lack of tension, which we agree with.

After we filmed
What was the weather like when we was filming?
The weather was extremely sunny and we found it too bright at times to get the exact footage that we were hoping for. But we did get the warmth that we were hoping for and it wasn't raining so we can not complain too much on the weather conditions.
Where did we film?
we was not allowed to film at our original location due to safety reasons but we did find a back up location at some garages and a parking lot along hills road. This was ended up being an ideal location to collect the footage that we wanted.

Editing process
Throughout the editing process there have been lots of drawbacks, including our footage getting corrupted and conditions for filming were not consistent. The film has all gone together well but the shots wanted were not produced as the surface we were filming on was to rough to use a dolly on therefore the shots are all static. This creates a amateur looking effect that had to be countered by adding effects and transitions throughout editing.
The sound track went through many edits before it was suitable and in time with the film, the first edit was not suitable and did not create the desired effect, it was to happy and did not make a serious looking production. The diagetic sound has been removed as I think it would be to gravely and consistent and would cause an irritation for the audience.
When putting both soundtrack and film together there were lots of little changes to be made to go together with the cuts and transitions. After many little changes the footage fitted well with the soundtrack and started to look more professional.

Rough Cut
In our rough cut we have changed part of our film to make it seem more suspicious, due to this it appears a very basic and cryptic opening sequence. We aimed to give off this effect because the opening sequence isn't supposed to give the film away. It comes across very confusing although it would be unraveled if we were to film more. This intrigues the viewer as to what part the charcter plays in the film is he a main role or is he a dream, all will be revealed if you watched the entire film. We are pleased with the rough cut but there is still much more to do as we still need credits and a title.

Problems
Our films have unfortunately been corrupted somehow, this was out of our control therefore it is something to do with the computer. This is a major set back as we now have to re film because we are unable to use the current film we were originally using.
We are lucky to be able to re film as this is the solution to our problem, despite this we now have limited time and we may not be able to get some of the shots we used before. This is due to weather conditions, days people can't do and traffic etc.
We are planning to come round this problem and make our film as successful as it was looking before.

Fight Club Music
The cult classic Fight Club (1999) was a very popular psychological thriller, the music in the opening sequence matches this mood. There is no diegetic sound as the sequence is an animated series of shots going from an adrenaline gland all the way to the tip of a gun pointed at the main characters mouth. The music is rough and metallic, this gives a good impression of what is going to come in the film. The band used is Dust Brothers an American metal band.
The music creates a good intro to the film as it builds tension within the animation sequence, along with it being called fight club you start to build an image of what is going to happen later on in the film. When the animation stops, so does the music it cuts to a real shot of the gun in the main characters mouth, the music cuts to a monologue from the main character explaining what is happening and creating a good starting image for the rest of the film,.

Target Audience
Our certificate is an 18, despite this our target audience can range from 16 to any age, this is because the storyline is basic and easy to understand. It does contain adult themes which explains the certificate, although 16+ can relate to this even though they are unable to watch it at the cinema/rent it etc.
The gender that our film is aimed at is mostly boys but it can also apply to girls depending on what type of film they enjoy.
People who would like our film would be those who are entertained by physiological thrillers and action films. Our film includes conventions from both of these genres alongside horror. Despite this we have stuck to the main genre of Thriller.
There are many existing films which have similar themes to ours, these include Momento and Fight Club.
They relate because they are based around memories and similar themes.
We will capture our target audience by using codes and conventions which apply to their interests and current themes which will keep it modern.

4 Good time keeping- for example do not make the film to long of to short so that the viewer does not understand the film.
5. Recording- make sure when you are filming that you are actually recording and are getting of the footage that you need and remember it is better to have to much footage than not enough.
6. Film shots that match the story-for example keep to the story-line and do not go off task.
7. Work as a team- share your thoughts and ideas to ensure that the whole group takes part and come up with the best ideas possible.
8. Wear headphones to block out things such as wind.

Reflection on Children's film:
Three things we did well in the Children's film:
1. The editing- this was one of the highlights of our video, when a panning shot was going from side to side overlooking the college with the edits of different locations of the college edited over the top.
2. when george was walking down the hall way and me and felix come out and walk behind him at the same time. This makes the perfect ending for our intro.
3. The way that we combined all 3 personalities at the end after seeing them separate in different locations.

Inspiration for Opening Sequence: Koyaanisqatsi
The film Koyaanisqatsi was a experimental film made in 1982 using footage collected from all across the world from all walks of life. It uses sped up footage to represent the sped up aspects of life in the present and also in the natural world. It took years to complete and is a really gripping film for having no dialogue. There are no characters or script, it all works from the flow of the film and the music.

2. One health and safety concern is having an actor on top of the roof looking down may cause some unwanted attention from members of the public. so whilst we are filming members of the public may cause a health and safety issue.
3. When we are filming at the bottom of the building we have to be careful of on coming traffic such as members of the public, cycles and cars.

These videos have to look as the audience would think memories to look, random and fast paced, to get this effect I have found mash up videos from the nineties to give an effect of it being in the past and obscure.

Shot Location Recce
The shot locations are based on being as urban as possible this will help encourage the grimy feel of the film. The rooftops and graffiti are very obvious themes for a urban setting, electricity substations and danger of death sign have underlying connotations for later on in the film. The rooftops give an overview of the scene and start to introduce the character.
This shot is very easily arranged with most streets having a substation on them finding one that is as a menacing and grim as we want could be more difficult. It needs to be very industrial to have the desired effect.
This shot shows the streets around the shot and puts the location in perspective.
These shots show the rooftop locations around the city that are easily accessible and overlook busy or interesting areas, hopefully we will shoot on a sunny day and then make it more monotone in the editing stage.

10 Second Break-Down
This is a quick run through of the plan for the introduction for our thriller film.
0-10secs - The screen fades in to a rushing city, lights and people.
10-20secs - Carries on panning across the cityscape stopping at danger of death signs and electric points
20-30secs - Pans up to a lone figure away from the bustle and rush on the edge of a high building
30-40secs - Sweeps along a roof with urban decor, up to the back of the figure
50-60secs - Looks over the figure, down to the street with him way above the bustle
60-70secs - Comes back round to a low shot of the figure from behind, slowly drags back
70-80secs - The figure turns around face in shadow. Walks towards camera face still obscured

Cast and Characters
The cast of the opening sequence is only one actor: Jakub Suberlak. The other part of the visual acting will be the general public however they will al be blurred in motion so no worries about permission to view.
The camerawork will be done by Felix Blake using a camcorder and tripod. This will ensure steady filming and a professional effect to the production. The editing will be done using the college equipment.
The soundtrack will be created using Logic Pro 8 this is the best music creation software and will create a very professional sounding soundtrack.

Location Research
The ideal location for our opening shoot is during a busy day in town overlooking from a high vantage point making the people flow into one showing there insignificance. Whilst one character, faceless, is standing overlooking the scene as if observing the mundanity of life. The opening ends with the character turning around but not seeing his face. This gives a sense of mystery and wondering what this character is to do with the film.
These locations will be ideal when busy as there is a lot to look at and there are easily accessible vantage points.

Initial Ideas and Name for Thriller Film
Initial ideas for names of thriller film:
Blogger - thriller about an invented family that lure two guys into a psychological trap via blogs, facebook and iphone. The family turns out to be one twisted woman who leads them on a trail that turns into a nightmare. The two guys struggle with the belief of wether the family is real or not until they fall out and carry off on different path further into the traps with the odd woman predicting every move.
EDIT - A high tension thriller where a man works out how to edit memories and convince people into working together to overthrow the world leaders, yet one girl stumbles upon his secret lab and has very little time to re edit the memories. This leads up to a very tense lead up and an explosive finale. The girl starts to get lost in the memories however and starts to like the power she has just found and starts to get addicted.

The two guys struggle with the belief of wether the family is real or not until they fall out and carry off on different path further into the traps with the odd woman predicting every move.

Ident drafts
We started off putting fonts and shapes of words together to try to create a logo, we ended up attempted to do a logo on photoshop, it was very simple with a lighter being lit with the word on it.
The idea changed and the font was placed next to the flame. This is a clever idea as even though the word is matchbox the visual is a lighter which is ironic. As the ideas progressed they changed to suit the logo and company. More ideas have been discussed so this is not the final idea.
Another idea was to have a green backgorund with the font over the top this is a simple and eye grabbing design. This meets all the criteria for a ident.
We will decide on a final design next lesson.

Warner Brothers
The Warner Brother's production logo, uses buildings to represent the 'W' & 'B' of the logo, this relates to the dream world in the film and the image of the city moving, which it does in the film. Using the city t represent the letters shows the setting on the film, and also adds to the hype of the film as Warner Brothers are prepared to change their logo for the film.
Idents
Regency Ident:
Regency productions produce serious films from thrillers to action and even comedy.
The ident is suitable to the company because it is subtle and serious, with not a lot of action just a subtle R this gives off the correct image for the target audience and is suitable in the opening scenes of a thriller film.

Analysing 2 Post Student Videos
Holding a shot steady were appropriate:
The camera was used appropriately throughout the filming
Using a variety of shot distances:
The group only filmed using only close ups which doesn't give the viewer a chance to understand the surroundings, but you could make an assumption of the setting from the soundtrack and gore.
Shooting material that appropriate to the task:
although the opening was very creepy, the material was more of a horror genre, as the amount of blood and gore used was a bit too much for the average thriller.
Selecting mise-en-scene
The audio used was all non diagetic, with the soundtrack consisting of young girl laughing which is contrapuntal. The lighting was quite dark which created an creepy atmosphere. The location; as you can't really tell because of the such close camera angles, you could imagine.
The Yearbooks soundtrack suited the clip very well, they didn't use enough variety of camera shots, mostly used close ups which didn't but props were used really effectively,

Using titles appropriately:
This was probably the best thing about this clip the titles were very proffesional and help add to an overall effect of professionalism. The way it is imposed on the scenery forces you to look for them slightly and they take you by surprise.

The Recruit- Analysing Crime & Convention
The conventions that make up a crime thriller, the film are usually confusing and have two main characters, one being the more official and well behaved role, sometimes the detective; in this case, the recruiter. Then the other is usually played by a less serious role. There is always a lot of twists and turns to confuse the viewer.
The charter James is introduced as someone who has lots of potential to succeed in life but doesn't entirely realise it at the start. His character starts of as normal as a bar worker and a part time inventor. The invention that he creates then leads to the next step in his life when he realises he is CIA material once he has been recruited by Walter Burke who is a very shifty man himself although it is technically part of his job. What is clear about James even in the early minuets is that he has a big chip on his shoulder about what really happened in his dad in his life and he knows that Walter knows the truth.
The film effects and filming techniques are a key part in making the film as good as it is. The lighting in the film was alway very dark, which gives a serious and exciting effect; for example, when the recruits were giving the task over breeching a building with out being caught, the lighting made this scene feeling more like it as an actual break in. The types of close ups also have an effect on how good this film is. For example when recruiting, there was a close up of Walters face and this showed us as the audience how serious he was about recruiting james.

Psychological thriller example analysis
Flight Plan (2005)
Flight plan is a simple psychological thriller compared to others as it is easier to understand, throughout the film the location stays the same (the air plane) and we are introduced to the main character right away.
We know something is wrong with Kyle at the beginning as she is shown taking pills, we also see her identifying a dead body in a hospital, this sets the scene but doesn't give away any of the storyline. We are then introduced to her daughter (Julia), we are aware these are the main characters as the plot follows them throughout. Kyle and her daughter Julia then go to the airport, we know something is wrong when Julia wonders off, her mum panics and the music gets faster and more suspicious, this gives us the idea that the film could be based around the daughter going missing. The colours are very dull and dark, this is a main convention of a thriller.
There was no film clips we could find on the internet but this is the trailer :

in the film Blood diamond there is a big threat against the safety and well being of all the people who come in contact or are caught up in anything or anyone who possesses an extremely rare diamond. Innocent people are shot dead due to a mass shoot out as some fellow south Africans desire to posses the famous diamond. For example when the two characters are running away from the people who are shooting at them, hundreds of south Africans are caught in the cross fire and lose there life's and this is without mentioning the vast amount of people who become captured. innocent or not they are caught up in "blood bath" as people become fixated with the diamond. The location of this film is in africa and where the shooting takes place is in a very run down part, this increases the viewrs sympathey towards the young chilldren who lose there life's or who are fighting to keep them, as it is clear to the audience that they all are very scared.

The hero is a very ordinary civilian that gets chucked into a world that he doesn't really know what is going on.
The camerawork and lighting is all kept very low-key and this creates a feeling of gloom and brings you down to the characters level. The film explains itself very slowly and you begin to settle into the wrong idea, this help when revealing the big twist at the end as it seems so unexpected.
The feeling of time is very much lost and this helps you feel as the main character does as he is an insomniac and has no real aspect of time.

Thriller Conventions
Thriller films stick to several conventions that define the genre. These make it easy to tell that it is a thriller, these often get confused with horrors but there are a few main differences.
Conventions of a thriller:
Music:
The soundtrack is usually quite subtle but constantly tense and keeps the mood of the film serious and keeps the audience engaged.
The instruments used are usually orchestral and are kept to a minimal score.
Lighting/Camerawork
The sets are usually very dimly lit and this is because of the use of low-key lighting and dingy locations.
The camerawork is all low level and kept below or at eye hight this gives a effect of being there or on the same level as the main characters, this keeps you involved on the characters level.
The Set
Thrillers are usually set in a city or urban location this also gives the effect of a never sleeping set where anything can happen at any time. The grungy location also ad to the sad or depressing feeling of the film. The sets are usually very dark and dusty, this helps you feel for the characters as you would not like to be there yourself.
Narrative
The narrative in thrillers usually slowly builds tension and creates an air of discontent that make you want to know what happens at the end, and this gives time for the characters to grow on you and by the end you feel strongly for the characters and this creates a better feel when, eventually, the film comes to a happy (or sad) conclusion.

prestige
The dark lighting at the start of the scene and before and magic trick takes place in the scene/ carrying on throughout the film, helps build suspense for the audience. The costume that balden the magition is wearing makes him look like a normal person and not part of the act, so when he passes under stage he looks guilty to the death of the other magition (the great danton).
when danton was drowning, frantic/ fast beat music was going to suggest that the great dantons life was in danger and then he dies following the insedant. The fact that Balden was watching Danton drown and did nothing to save him earlier suggests he is an evil character.

PRELIMINARY Task
This preliminary task went better than last time because the shots were cleaner, and Olly took his role alot more seriously which did show in the filming. When filming the cameraman made a mistake of filming and stopping filming whilst it should have been.
